Safety Tips.....Help yourself by providing emergency contactsWith more than 2 million Floridians expected to drive 50 miles or more from their homes on holiday weekends, law enforcement and state officials will rely on motorists' emergency contact information to locate loved ones in case of an accident or other medical situation that makes a person unable to speak. In case of an emergency, here's how you can help the people helping you: IN YOUR WALLET Write it: Police suggest drivers keep emergency contact information inside their wallets, as close as possible to the driver's license. ON YOUR CELL PHONE Program it: When a deputy can't find a person's identification, they'll look through the cell phone to find key numbers. Clearly named listings can help. Some places around the country promote cell phone listings with the acronym "ICE" (In Case of Emergency), to denote numbers of friends and loved-ones. LET YOUR LICENSE DO THE TALKING Enter it online: Recently the state's Division of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles introduced the Online Emergency Contact Information System. Florida residents with valid driver's licenses can enter emergency contact information on the Web site using their license number. When an officer feeds a motorist's driver's license number into patrol car computers, emergency contact information will automatically be displayed. The same privacy laws that protect driver's license information cover emergency information as well, according to the site. So far, 400,000 people are participating.
